SuSE Linux 10 0 DVD

3 stars (SuSe and Digital Video Editing) - I'll be happy to be proven wrong by 10.0, but one area where 9.3 was very weak was Digital Video (DV) editing. There are and abundance of robust and stable commercial packages available for Windows for around $100. My favorite is Pure Motion's Edit Studio. The Suse trial version of MainActor crashed frequently and I could not get Broadcast 2000 to run at all other than in DV capture mode. Kino worked, but is low on features and not intuitive. Cinelerra looks powerful, but its specs demand high-powered hardware, and it scared me off. I understand that there are licensing issues with DRM, codecs etc, but DV has now become a mainstream activity on home PCs. I could easily migrate to Suse Linux, but I have to keep a Windows box around to edit DV and create DVDs. For out-of-the-box DV editing, Win boxes are way ahead on points - don't even consider Linux if you do DV exclusively. On the other hand, the KB III burning software distributed with Suse works flawlessly, and I was able to get freeware MPEG-II conversions running. The quality of the encodings when viewed with Xine was amazing. One very interesting DV tool in Linux is the Blender 3D graphics program, which includes many video post-processing features, and allows you to add special effects, graphical overlays, and animated titles. [However, Blender also runs fine on Win PCs.] If you don't mind hunting down and installing packages to mess around with, it is worth considering Linux for post-processing. Firewire support worked flawlessly up to a point, but I had to find packages to support DV capture from my Sony camcorder. I also had problems getting Suse to recognize and mount a large-capacity LaCie firewire drive, partitioned into NTFS and Fat-32 partitions. One other issue is file formats. I work with commercial vector graphics packages such as Adobe Illustrator and would like to see more robust import features on the Open Source side. I realize that Ado...

Xandros Desktop OS Business Edition

5 stars (A complete business solution and Windows alternative !!!) - This Linux operating system coupled with the book "Linux Made Easy: The Official Guide to Xandros 3 for Everyday People" is just about all you will need! If you don't have any Linux experience or knowledge and want an EASY transition...Xandros 3.0 is the way to go. This is not a limited version. If your a home or business user looking for a quick, affordable and VERY FRIENDLY product...go with Xandros. Xandros has made the specific effort of trying to be just like Windows XP using the Linux kernel. It succeeds! If you want an easy, simple to use, full featured experience try Xandros 3.0 Business Edition. The business edition does supply you with Star Office 7 (the Linux/open source version of Microsoft's Office 2003)and CodeWeaver's CrossOver Office (a program that allows you to run many Windows programs in a Linux environment). You can also purchase these separately. CodeWeaver will be releasing version 5 in September and version 6 in December. I would wait and buy version 6, it is going to knock your socks off with rich features and compatibility!!! To sum it all up and keep this review short, simple and sweet - Xandros Business Desktop 3 is an excellent Linux distro to learn on, it is extremely easy to use, learn and install. It acts just like Windows XP, it automatically configures itself (right out of the box!!!) to communicate with an existing Windows network. I did not think it would be that easy until I tried navigating my business LAN and found it was already done for me!! HOORAY!!!! Xandros is soooooooo beginner/user friendly. You will feel right at home and it will only cost you $120 !!! Windows XP Pro costs $200. If you have 1 home machine, you save $80. If you have 10 office computers, you save $800! This product is also FAST, especially on older computers. I had 5 old Pentium 3 933 MHz machines running Windows 2000 Pro with 256 MB of ram and 20 GB hard drives purchased in...

Linspire Oooff- Windows-Mac

5 stars (Not only of a very high quality, but save $$$ on licenses) - I agree 100% with the previous reviewers in the fact that OpenOffice, Firefox, and the other main packages are rich in features and of a very good quality. Even if Microsoft stuff would be free of charge, I'd prefer these packages 10 to 1 over Microsoft, precisely because of quality. Now, the main point I want to make is, that if you have more than one computer, let's say three as I have at home, savings will add up very quickly. For example, just talking about MS Office: each license for each computer is $400+. To be perfectly legal you should buy 3 licenses x $400 = $1,200 (or more). With Open Office you won't spend more for one, than you'll spend for 3, or 20, because it's open source. Under the General Public License, you could install it on an unlimited number of computers, and remain perfectly legal. So, the only Microsoft product my wife and daughter are running on their respective computers, due to compatibility issues with the local school district, is Windows 98SE, but everything else is open source, including Open Office, Firefox, and Thunderbird. Of course, all machines are dual boot with Linux Open Suse 10.0, which in my case is the one that I use almost exclusively. BTW, just if you're considering getting rid of Microsoft products altogether, you can get Linspire 5.0, Suse 10.0, or any other major Linux distro, and you'll be amazed that all of these applications and much, much more, come included. You'll be a happy camper in a world of freedom! 5 stars (Good but save your money) - Okay maybe if your connection is slow or you don't have access to broadband you can buy this CD,but if not why bother? OpenOffice.org is freely available online as is Firefox. I use and love both so don't get me wrong here, but the price is a little too much but then again it goes to the developers. Ooo is a great alternative to Microsoft Office and even Star Office. It does everything the same f...

Xandros Linux Desktop OS 3 Standard Edition

4 stars (Finally, a useable Linux for the not-as-geeky) - I have always considered myself a computer geek. However, when it comes to Linux, I just can't comprehend much. Xandros is the only Linux that I have tried that is easy to install and configure. I tried Ubuntu and with one computer the monitor was a bunch of garble and on the other computer I could not figure out how to hook up the wireless internet connection (I read a lot of forums online and just got a headache looking at them.) With Xandros, the partitioning and dual boot setup is easy, I configured my wireless card with WEP with no problem. Compared to Windows, this OS is noticeable slower. Slower to boot up, but not unbearable and opening Firefox takes even longer than Windows, which is pretty slow. Open Office is a painfully slow program now matter what. Grant it, I am trying it out on a older 1ghz system but it took over 15 seconds to open the spreadsheet application. The choice of programs are somewhat limited, but useful. I am happy using this in a dual boot configuration. I have programs that I use for a security system and I know they won't come out with a Linux version, so I have to stick with XP for that. For web surfing and general use however, you can save yourself the headaches of viruses and spyware because it would be virtually impossible to get on Linux. 5 stars (A MUST for beginning Linux users) - If you don't have any Linux experience or knowledge and want an EASY transition...Xandros 3.0 is the way to go. I disagree with the previous review of 3 stars. This is not a limited version. Upgrades can be done. If your a heavy, Linux geek, you would not use Xandros anyway! But if your a home user looking for a quick, affordable and VERY FRIENDLY product...go with Xandros. Xandros has made the specific effort of trying to be just like Windows XP using the Linux kernel. It succeeds! If you want a more full featured version, try Xandros 3.0 Business Edition. More than likely, if your the typ...

SUSE LINUX Professional 9 3 Update

5 stars (I love it) - I use to be a Mandrake fan, But I really love this SUSE 9.3 the best. Evrything works and did on th first install. I am using it now and no blue screens of death. For you new linux users, don't believe the hype about Mandrake being more user friendly. SUSE 9.3 is a great Linux Distribution. 5 stars (Very complete -- full features) - I have been using SuSE Linux since version 7.3. I have upgraded the 7.3 to 9.0 the last time, now 9.3 looked very promising. Installation is a breeze. Lots of software including development tools, games, and server functionality. I have been a happy SuSE user for over four years now. I hope they keep up their good work since they got acquired by Novell and won't make major upsetting changes for their licensing and usage. Corporate greed, you never know... I am an avid Microsoft developer, administrator, and user (MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA), but if you want to get into Linux world, I assure you that you would not be disappointed if you get SuSE Linux 9.3. As they say, "Have a lot Fun!" Cheers! - Baskin 3 stars (Not up to the old SuSe standards) - I've been running various versions of SuSe Linux for several years now. It seems a shame that their level of quality appears to be suffering now that they are working for the Novell bottom line. I do professional development, and while the distribution is relatively OK, it was surprising to find that the development system as distributed doesn't seem to know much about threads (certainly not the debugger). If all you want is a client side system, then this distro will probably work for you. If you are more serious and in development, try another distro. Even Fedora Core 4 looks better. ...

Sun StarOffice 8

4 stars (a nice office suite) - I have been using StarOffice since version 5.2, it's a great product. SUN provides a trial version of Staroffice 8. It's always a good idea to try something before you buy it, especially if you are new to it. Sun also sells a downloadable version of StarOffice 8 at $69.99. If you are a student or a teacher, you can download StarOffice 8 for free from SUN's education software programm. Actually that's how I get my StarOffice since version 5.2. StarOffice 8 is based on OpenOffice 2 with a little bit more features, including more fonts, more clip art and 60 days of free support. If those are not important to you, you might just want to download OpenOffice 2.0 since it's totally free. Here is my experience of using StarOffice. 1. There are many non-Microsoft office softwares, none of them is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. But the compatibility is more than enough for home users who do not heavily use Macro or scripts. I use StarOffice at home, Microsoft Office at school, I don't have any serious problem to use one to open files created by another. 2. SUN does not provide a full user manual for the downloadable version when I wrote this review though a simple getting-start guide is available at their website, I don't know if it's included in the retail package. That's too bad for new buyers since the features and functions can easily overwhelm anybody. But if you used StarOffice in the past, you should have no problem. I still use the manual of version 7 for version 8 since most of it does not change much. The manual for OpenOffice 2.0 applies for StarOffice 8 too. I just downloaded the manual. It's still in draft version, but looks pretty much complete. 3. StarOffice 8 is a solid package which covers everything for home use. 4. The PDF export function is great. My overall experience with this software is more than satisfactory. ...
