A Child Called -It-- One Child-s Courage to Survive

4 stars (Wonderful Insight into Resilence and Protective Factors) - I had been wanting to purchase this book for quite some time, but never got around to it until it was assigned for a psychology course I was enrolled in. True, it is a short text, and true, the grammar is not perfect - but it is not meant to be. Pelzer wrote the book as an adult, but tried to write it from his perspective when he was a child (the time period when he actually experienced the events detailed in the book). If this book had been written from a purely adult, grammatically "proper" perspective, it would have gained a more "distant" tone and thereby lost some of it's power to really grip and touch the reader. The text can be read in awe of what Pelzer experienced as a child, certainly. But that is not all one can gather from it. The trianglization, power struggles, and family dynamics which play out throughout the story are not only dramatic, but very clinically realistic. The potential effects of alcohol use on family structure are an eye-opener. And most of all, one should note the protective factors David found in his life which enabled him to survive his mother's horrendous patterns of abuse - while they are not nearly so dramatic as all the "punishment" he endured, they are just as significant. This would be a good book particularly for anyone who works with children (or plans to), whether they are a psychologist, counselor, educator, social worker, mentor, or even a parent. Too often adults see only the negative things that have happened to a child, and fear the effects that those things may have on the child's behavior or personality... it is just as important to be able to recognize what strengths, talents, and interests are in children which allow them to cope with or overcome negative factors. 1 stars (laundry list with no context) - If the abuse was real, or if even part of it was, my sympathy goes out to the author and my praise for rising above it. Chicken Soup for the Military Wife-s Soul - Stories to Touch the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit Chic

4 stars (Second-hand Review) - I did not read this myself, but I sent it to my friend who's husband (my best friend of about 12 years) is in Iraq. She said it gave her a good cry and made her feel a better, which the latter part is what I was going for. So from her review to me, I would recommend it. 4 stars (Can't Wait for More.) - Chicken Soup for the Soul books just get better and better. I'm waiting for my next Military Wife's edition and am hoping for a Military Children's edition as well. I gave this 4 stars only because I save 5 for those that excede my expectations. 5 stars (The most AMAZING and ESSENTIAL book for any Military Spouse) - I have read many of the Chicken Soup books, but being a military spouse this is the one that really touched my heart the most! The Power of Focus - How to Hit Your Business- Personal and Financial Targets with Absolute Certaint

4 stars (Good book that reinforces solid ideas) - This book is helpful because it reinforces universal principles. I didn't find much new here, but I did overcome some obstacles that had been in my way. If you are looking for a great book, read my favorite, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self, because and you will rise above mediocrity and the great into the best that life can offer. 5 stars (Your life equals the sum total of your habits.) - I looked thru a few of the reviews about this book and I have to laugh at the review that said this information is for Homer Simpson and that anyone over the age of 10 should have figured it out. I must ask if it's so obvious, why do most people waste time working at jobs they hate, just to pay the bills, living a life of wasted talent and never come close to becoming rich or even more important happiness? If success is so obvious, why do most of us not take the necessary tasks? This book is in my top 5 of over about 280 personal development books I have read. I will agree that the topics are very simple, but extremely effective. We are all blessed with the same number of hours in a day. The ONLY way you will become happy and successful is if you learn to manage your habits, time, and money. Most of us waste many hours of the day doing meaningless tasks. Do you think your doctor would want to mop the floors? NO WAY. Why is it then that most of us feel as if we have to be a jack of all trades and master none? This book talks of specialization and how to make the most of this one time shot called life. This book makes sense of how to get down to the core of self-development which is how to change your habits, which will in turn change your life. If I had to recommend 2 books to anyone, the first would be this and the second would be The Master Key to Riches by Napoleon Hill. 5 stars (Great book) - Too bad our Canadian friend didn't use the book. Healing the Shame That Binds You

2 stars (For shame) - What is the longevity of John Bradshaw's book, and how does his writing stand up in the perspective of time. The book was published over ten years ago, and it seems to have dropped through the cracks of the large and populous human growth floorboards, of which it was a part. The first thing I noticed about Bradshaw's writing is its sheer verbosity. He writes in a roundabout way, rather than concisely and to the point. Contrast him, for example, with a writer on Buddhism or Taoism (say, Alan Watts?). Writing on Buddhism or Taoism may provide authors with a natural impetus to be concise, but the human growth movement is broad and billowy, and concise writing may not be important to the authors. And Bradshaw seems to drag in every alley cat he ever heard meow in the human growth movement, to help him reflect on what he sees as the underlying principle of it all: Shame. Bradshaw reports that he is a theologian, but also someone who recovered from alcoholism, and was deeply shamed as a child, which shame he finally learned to deal with and overcome. There are many fine snippets from his book, which may be of use to folks, but overall, I think most people looking for direction are going to be repelled by his constant conceptualizations. To paraphrase another well-known quotation, "People cannot live on concepts alone." If he had given more personal studies or little case histories, it would have been much more helpful. Instead, he includes page after page of some "guided" meditations or shame inquiries, which were totally useless to me. If you are looking for guided meditations, this is the place for you. So, in all, Bradshaw's book does not hold up to scrutiny after time, in my opinion. It's one of the many from its era and niche that was forgotten and will be unlikely to remembered henceforth.
