Losing Moses on the Freeway - The 10 Commandments in America

5 stars (Text: 5 Title: 0 Marketing: - 10) - I purchased my copy of this abominably titled book in Borders, in the "Christianity, Practical Living" section. I am not a Christian and sought it out solely because of my familiarity with Hedges' earlier work. This is not a "Christian" book, any more than Krzysztof Kieslowski's "The Decalogue" (its model) is a "Christian" television series. Kieslowski and his writing partner, Krzysztof Piesiewicz, a lawyer from whose experiences several of the episodes were taken, focused "The Decalogue" on the fictionalized lives of people entangled in ancient moral dilemmas in bleak 1980s Warsaw. Hedges takes the same tack with ten non-fictional vignettes from life in 21st century post-industrial America. I find Hedges' writing almost unbearably intense; his moral authority clearly hard won. Even when I disagree with him, I have nothing but respect for his courage in refusing to look away. Here is a man who has obviously been deeply affected by what he has witnessed and experienced in life and is determined to learn---and teach---from it. That the teachings are very, very old only makes this book all the more worth reading, absorbing and passing on---whether you are a Christian or not. 5 stars (Losing Moses, but finding a great book. ) - I would highly recommend Hedges' book on the Ten Commandments. It is far more than your typical study guide. Rather, it provides a deep understanding of the ripple effect that our moral and ethical lapses have on those around us. In a world that is consumed with the end justifying the means, Hedges addresses in this decalogue the means that all might do well to consider. 5 stars (A New Code of Ethics to Live By) - Many Americans want to reduce the Ten Commandments to an idol to be worshipped in a public place. This book lives up to the original intent of the Ten Commandments - a guide to meditation on what really makes an ethical life. Read Jesus's Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters...

The Message- The Bible in Contemporary Language

5 stars (Clear and inspiring) - Peterson's rendering of the Bible is fresh and insightful. The verses' numbers being in the margin, enable me to look up specific verses and yet read passages as more complete thoughts. 5 stars (think) - Too many Christians forget what is was like to be new in the faith. Remember when the bible was total confusion until your priest or pastor shed some light on the subject being discussed? This book kept me focusing on spiritual issues instead of a mystery novel when I was a baby Christian (at age 40) and confused. What would you rather have you kid reading, "The Message" or more 'instant messaging'? I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Christianity. It is not meant to replace the bible. It is meant to draw you back to the bible with more clarity. 1 stars (Read's like a childrens book) - Ok, if you have a very small vocabulary and don't like to get the exact meaning of things but like to get an overall idea of what is going on, then this book is for you. It's so paraphrased that is honostly upsets me. It seems like it's not even really the bible. Passages and stories are designed to read like modern day times, but the only problem is that this stuff isn't modern day at all, and isn't supposed to be. I don't suggest it unless you've never read the bible before and are in elementary school. ...

The Zahir - A Novel of Obsession

1 stars (Narcissism ne plus ultra) - This guy is so self referential that I kept reading mostly from complete astonishment. I bought this because I had five minutes and twenty choices in an airport; why do other people do it? It is self indulgent navel gazing drivel. Mary 3 stars (Not my Coelho's favourate) - The Zahir did not mesmarize me like Coelho's other books. It is not that it is a bad book, not at all, but I just found it to be below my expectation from a book by Paulo Coelho. 5 stars (A FABULOUS FABULIST COMPELLINGLY READ) - British stage, film and TV actor Jamie Glover gives a sterling performance, immediately intriguing listeners with a mesmerizing story of obsession. Told in the first person by a nameless narrator, Glover ably carries us along on a journey, a search not only for a loved one but also perhaps for meaning, answers to the riddle of life. The narrator is a successful author living in Paris with his wife, Esther, who is an accomplished journalist, a war correspondent. She has just returned from Iraq only to disappear again. It's not known whether she ran away or was kidnaped, whether she is alive or dead. She was last seen with a man younger than she, a man who hid his true identity but was known as Mikhail. Could he be her lover? According to author Coelho the idea of the zahir stems from the Islamic tradition, it means "incapable of going unnoticed. It can refer to an object or a person, and that object or person gradually takes over our every thought, until we are unable to think of anything else. This could be considered a state of holiness or a state of madness." We'll leave it to the listener to decide which description is most appropriate for our narrator as he undertakes a journey to find Esther. He knows that she felt a deep unrest and was unsatisfied with her life, although he cannot comprehend why. He was stunned when she announced that she wanted to become a war correspondent, yet he also understood that h...

5 stars (Happy Customer!) - This was the first used textbook that I purchased online. The book was in almost-new condition, it arrived within 5 days after I placed the order, AND the cost was 50% less than the used book price at my college bookstore! I'll be searching Amazon again next semester! 5 stars (A VERY GOOD MATH BOOK!!!!!!) - So often, math textbooks are beyond anyone's comprehension. Here is one book that has changed all that! There are plenty of examples and explains the reasons and theories as to why a certain math topic is solved the way it is. It also shows different ways one could solve problems! This 6th edition doesn't have much difference from the 5th except for more on Statistics and Probability. ...

Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time- The Historical Jesus - the Heart of Contemporary Faith

4 stars (The future of christianity) - Fundementalists beware, your world may be shaken when you read this intelligent book. Borg is a great scholar and theologian. he has a nice touch and presents jesus in a believable and humble light without taking away the divine aspect. This is an antidote against religious fundementalists who wnat to own Jesus and create an exclusive cult they call christianity. 4 stars (Informative book about the historical Jesus) - I actually decided to read Borg's books after reading some of John Crossan's books where Borg was referenced. I thought the set-up of this book was extremely helpful in illustrating what Borg was discussing. However, I think I had hoped this would be more of a "heart-felt" novel. I understand Borg had to get in all the historical information about Jesus (and he did an incredible job at that) but I had hoped he would speak of Jesus on more of an emotional level. I felt as I was more of an outsider looking in on the life of Jesus rather than a comrade right next to him. And perhaps that is the effect Borg wanted. All in all, a great book with great information. What I found most interesting in this whole book was the link between Jesus and Sophia (wisdom). Borg makes an excellent point to contrast the "Son of God" image of Jesus by saying Jesus was personified as Wisdom- a feminine term in Greek. He does this to stress the many metaphors used when defining Jesus and says we must not take them literally. All in all a great read with great information. 5 stars (Dr. Borg is a gifted writer and loving Spirit filled person) - Before reading Marcus Borg's masterpiece "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" I was a self proclaimed agnostic. After reading it I realized I wasn't an agnostic, but an atheist to the God of conservative Christianity. Borg carefully and compassionately details another form of Christianity, a Christianity centered on love of neighbor, love of self, love of intellect and love of the God i...

The Message Remix Bible in Contemporary Language

3 stars (Good and not so good) - I bought this bible for my teenage daughter who had requested it. We had heard great comments about it and were somewhat disappointed after receiving our copy. The way my daughter explained it, a lot has been lost in the translation. Some sentences are great because it really puts some things in perspective, but some sentences are awful because it's lost the lyric quality and familiarity of nearly every other bible translation/revision. Neither of us will be using it as our primary bible. 5 stars (Great Translation Of the Bible) - Great book in a new form that is understood by anyone instaed of all the complex words. It is the most clearest Bible ever. Pick one up and start reading. 5 stars (Spectacular Translation) - Very useful, down-to-earth explanations and translation of the Bible. A vivid one page summary precedes each book and casts extra light on the themes of the books of the Bible. Passages I've often been perplexed over as to how to apply them to my own life are revealed through the simple-to-understand language used to translate them. I've already given two as gifts and will give more in the future...highly recommended!! ...

Contemporary Lampworking- A Practical Guide to Shaping Glass in the Flame 2 Vol Set

5 stars (must have for any lamp worker) - this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny. 5 stars (The best book in its class) - If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there. 2 stars (It's Just OKAY!) - To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance. ...

Emily Post-s Wedding Etiquette- Cherished Traditions and Contemporary Ideas for a Joyous Celebration

1 stars (Panic in the wedding aisle!) - Yikes! I am newly engaged, and this book scared the bejebbers out of me! My fiance and I were looking at a simple wedding. This book intends to scare you into looking at more and more elaborate proceedings. Finally, you are at the point where you believe no one but a diety called a "wedding planner" can actually pull off a wedding. Perhaps it is where I live and my social-economic class, but this book view of etiquette is manners that quickly translates into cash. I literally woke up in the middle of the night when I considered how much everything would cost and how far behind the wedding planning was. My friends who are married knew what sort of wedding I had in mind and did not hestitate to tell me to send the book BACK. 5 stars (This massive guide is all-inclusive and brilliant) - Not just for Etiquette! This book is an impressive wealth of knowledge and information, and is just loaded with useful information that I've never found in other wedding books, and I've bought and browsed my share of them. You need not worry this book will just repeat information you may already have in other books, this book will complement your collection and give you lots of details you probably won't find anywhere else. It's the wedding Bible. And, although Post is the authority on Etiquette, not only is this guide the only Etiquette helper you'll ever need, it also is a huge help in planning and ideas. You won't find any glossy full color photos in here but this book offers so much those other more "glossy" books don't have. This is a MUST for any engaged couple. 5 stars (Great wedding resource, more than etiquette) - This is a great book for any bride to be. It includes not only etiquette, but it also has tips. It was especially useful for wording on invitations, and also for the envelopes. A classic! ...

Match Me If You Can

4 stars (Light-Hearted Romance) - After listening and enjoying the new Harry Potter book, this book was a delight. The characters were interesting and there are many funny moments. I was looking for an interesting romantic book after being in the dark world for a while. This book fit the bill. 5 stars (Perfect for each other...) - I absolutely adored this book. This is the second book by author Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I have had the pleasure of reading and I have loved them both. The first `AINT SHE SWEET' was a fun romantic novel that also had somewhat of a serious side while `MATCH ME IF YOU CAN' was all fun! I found myself reading through the chapters quickly so I could find out what happened next. Matchmaker Annabelle Granger and Sports agent Heath Champion are a couple that you will be rooting for from the very beginning. The chemistry is great and the pacing of the story is just right. SEP gives you exactly what you want when you want it without making anything too easy. Can't wait for her next one...but in the meantime I think I will brush up on some of her previous works! 4 stars (She's done it again!) - Susan Elizabeth Phillips has done it again, this time with a tale of a sassy wannabe matchmaker, Annabelle, who will do anything to succeed in her new business venture and keep her overachieving family off her back. Her first big client Heath is a handsome self made man who is too busy to find his ideal trophy wife. The relationship that develops between Annabelle and Heath was slow to start off, but sparks eventually began to fly. I picked up this book because SEP has become a favorite, and she didn't disappoint with this offering, either. ...

Contemporary Sport Management

5 stars (Great book) - This book was required for my introduction to sport management classes. JB Parks and J. Quarterman did a fantastic job at putting this introductory book together. Whats even better is that my professor for this class was JB Parks herself, in her final year before retiring from Bowling Green State University. She is a wonderful professor and very smart in the field of sports management. I would suggest this book for any sports management major, professor, etc. 4 stars (Very Helpful) - This book was a required textbook in one of my sport management major classes - it's the only one so far that I've bothered to keep. The information is timely and easy to reference. ...

The Aclu Vs America- Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values

1 stars (Right Wing Trash Propaganda ) - Blaming the ACLU for all the ills of American society, this book is just another in a long series of shallow attacks in the right-wing's war against anything that threatens to undermine its greed and power in America today. For instance, this book blames the ACLU for why pornography thrives in our culture, yet it was the Supreme Court and staunch conservatives that voted for First Amendment Rights related to pornography's distribution on the Internet. It was primarily the right-wing idealogues on the Supreme Court bench, who gave full power to pornographic material's dissemination on the Internet. Always hurling blame at liberals, one would think that there are no right-wing idealogues who watch porn in America. Of course not, all of these conservative men obviously would never stoop to such immoral behavior! My point is that these authors are so full of it. They are just part of the huge political war machine attempting to maintain its political ground by lying to people about what its about and what it stands for. Unjustified war from greed, while deliberately neglecting relief for disaster victims -- that is what these liars are about! Greed, power and conquests of the weak and vulnerable. These right-wing idealogue men do not have the upper hand on morality. They are the lowest scum sucking trash on planet earth who would let people die in a hurricane and lie about their neglect in the rescue efforts they were forwarned would be needed. They lie and hide behind an illusory political game that enables them to rape and rob the American people in the process. These men are sick! You don't hear them criticizing why we went to war for no justified reason, do you? They are using the old deflection from scrutiny by attacking institutions that expose their hyporisy. These people are desperate and they are losers groping for anything they can to maintain this false illusion that they represent America's values. If ...
