Cultural Anthropology - The Human Challenge with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

4 stars (I don't know why the other reviews are so critical) - I bought this because it is needed for my Cultural Anthropology class and it's a pretty smooth read. It has a definate liberal bias but no more than any other college book I've had to buy, if anything it's a bit less liberal bias than some of the books I've had to suffer through. It's topics are very interesting and in most places the authors at least try to be neutral. The really good part of the book is not the part the instructors normally assign but the stuff in the yellow boxes which are almost like reading stories. 5 stars (A Good Introductory Text) - This is one of the better anthropology texts available today. It is very comprehensive, well-organized, and takes a very broad view of the human condition. The problem with textbooks is that they sometimes summarize issues as if they were settled questions, when, in reality, many of the problems involved are the subjects of complex debate. This is not necessarily a bad thing, since the majority of undergraduate students are not interested in primary sources that are very difficult to read and take a lot of work to understand. As an instructor I found the book to be very good as a basic resource that allowed me to teach my perspective of the discipline to students using supplementary materials and lectures. The major drawback is that it is so expensive, but not more so than other textbooks out there. Here is what one of my very good students said about the book, "I found it to be well-organized, thorough, and easy to understand. I have never taken a class in this subject before, so I have nothing to compare it to, but as far as I can tell it is a useful text. I had one other cultural anthropology class this term and I was able to use the textbook from your class as a reference from time to time. I chose anthropology as my minor, and so for further reference purposes I have kept the text from your class." Students who have strong politic...

Psychological Testing - Principles- Applications- and Issues

5 stars (Psychological testing, principles, applications and issues) - I have read many books in the psychology field, and I thought this book did an excellent job of presenting clear and concise information on psychological testing. The book focused on the various testing techniques that are used in the psychology field. It raised important issues around how to appropriately apply testing and why we use them. i recommend this book to professionals in the field or to anyine who may have a curiosity about psychological testing in general. It's a real eye opener!Your interest won't fade out. ...

Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy with Web Site- Chapter Quiz Booklet- and InfoTr

3 stars (Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy) - The book was received in a timely basis. The book was in adequate shape. However almost every word in the book was underlined with several different colors of markers. I have never received a book with so much marker wear. I would not have purchased it if I had known how used it was. I do not remember what the condition was listed as being for this book. Therefore I cannot blame my purchase on the seller. 1 stars (Disappointed) - In ordering the PACKAGE for Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy by Gerald Corey, I entered the ISBN # for the PACKAGE. I had declined several options for the HARDCOVER ONLY because I wanted the PACKAGE including the Student Manual. I received the shipment in a fairly timely manner. HOWEVER, I was only sent the HARDCOVER! I paid $10 more than I could have gotten that single book for locally right across the street from my college! I ended up having to order the manual separately from another seller. I was unable to contact seller because name given did not match what was on the shipment. My serenity is worth more than a $10 fight! I would not use this seller again. 5 stars (Excellent source for the discovery of underlying issues in life) - If anyone thinks that this book concern only to students in the counseling field i shall tell: you are mistakenly wrong. This book really helps bringing out hidden realities of our lives that we do not get used to accept. In my own particular case it made me faced some realities that had deep roots years back, to say my childhood. This is worth the hundred dollars. Do not hesitate buying it. If you do not like any of the philosophical points of any given theory you will probably like the other one of the next chapter and so on......The chapter describing the life cycle is extra excellent...well the hell incredible.....the best you know which cycle you are in the better prepared for future stages in life the bett...

The Practice of Social Research with CD-ROM and InfoTrac Practice of Social Research

4 stars (Textbook) - I use this for my text for an upper division Soc class - is a good book - easy to read - wish I had the CD! 5 stars (Fast, Accurate and Great Condition) - I was skeptical when the description said they ship same day but took the chance because I had waited till the last minute to order my books. I placed the order Monday morning and received the book Wednesday just in time for class!!! Thank you for the fast delivery with no extra charge to me!!! And of course as promised the book was in excellent condition and everyone in class was jealous because I paid less and got better service then most of them!!!! 2 stars (Babbie is a textbook machine, not a researcher) - I have taught a survey research course for 3 semesters and used this book because it was recommended. If you want to teach a course in overall research methods, this may be your book. If you want to teach survey research, use something else. Too much of the book focuses on qualitative methods. In addition, some of his information is simply off-base. His discussion of the reasons for using stratified sampling is particularly erroneous. In addition, the research he uses as examples (research he has conducted) was done 20 years ago and is neither interesting nor enlightening. In addition to the problems with the text book, the publishing company is not terribly helpful. I had to hound them to get desk copies and a test bank. They never did send me a copy of the study guide. It seems as though Earl Babbie writes text books to make money, not because he is a researcher with an abundance of information to share with the world. If you want an introductory level book on survey research, use Czaja and Blair (Pine Forge Press), Fowler (Sage) or another book written by people who actually do survey research. The one positive thing I can say is that his workbooks on how to use SPSS are pretty good. ...

Biological Psychology with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

4 stars (cells over systems) - I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis. 4 stars (as for textbooks.....) - as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this! 4 stars (Great textbook!) - I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ...

Theory and Practice of Group Counseling with InfoTrac

3 stars (student manual for theory & practice of group counseling) - very pleased with the quick service. The book was in very good condition 5 stars (A fantastic text. Full of information, easy to understand.) - I was fortunate enough to take my group counseling class from Dr. Corey himself at Cal State Fullerton. The experience of learning from and being coached by Dr. Corey was amazing, and allowed even further insight into this text. The formula of the book is easy to follow. Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself. A must read for anyone training to be a counselor! 5 stars (Excellant Group Counseling Book) - I am using this book in a graduate level group counseling class. I have found it to be very useful. It gives you an excellant overview of the various theories and how they can be utilized within group counseling. The Corey's have also produced a video tape of a group counseling session that also provides so valuable information. ...

Understanding Nutrition with CD-ROM and InfoTrac Understanding Nutrition

5 stars (It's, well, easy to digest.) - All jokes aside, while students may gripe about having to shell out the bucks for this textbook, it is well worth the money. I've got an earlier edition and have used it a lot in the past. I found the later editions to be very up to date and quite useful as a reference for some of the clinical questions I encounter while working with patient education issues. In the days of picky insurance reimbursement, it's vital that all the stuff we do be based on sound clinical information showing that what we do is indeed effective. Easy to understand and a well laid-out text with many good illustrations, there's a good reason its a standard in the field. Can also recommend "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight-Loss Plan" as a sound patient education tool on the basics of losing weight that's also evidence-based. 2 stars (A Book Meant to Be Spit Out) - Francis Bacon said that some books are meant to be chewed, some swallowed, and some digested. This book is meant to be spit out. I recently returned to the college classroom as a student of Human Anatomy and of Nutrition (preparing for entrance into a nursing program). For those classes I read, respectively, Marieb's "Human Anatomy and Physiology" and Whitney's "Understanding Nutrition." The contrast between these two widely-used textbooks could not be greater. The one is clearly written, lucidly organized, and filled with revealing graphics; the other is horribly opaque, repetitive and senseless in organization, and replete with distracting charts and photos. Comparisons are odious, so I will just amplify my main points and have done. This book reads as though written by someone who is more anxious to prove the scientific merit of her field or her own expertise in the latest research than by someone interested in helping the reader understand major concepts for further study. Virtually every paragraph has the main point--if there is one--obscured somewhere in the fourt...

Abnormal Psychology - An Integrative Approach with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

5 stars (Cheaper Paperback book) - The book was very reliable (and cheaper) than what I could have bought at the bookstore. So far, the book is working well and I have no doubts. 5 stars (DSM-IV explained (maybe).) - Using DSM-IV criteria throughout, the authors manage to provide a succinct analysis of psychopathology, as seen from a transtheoretical perspective. The research alone quoted throughout makes this book a valuable resource, but combined with an engaging writing style and top-notch structure, it promises to secure Barlow and Durand's position as authors-to-beat when it comes to the field of Abnormal Psychology. 5 stars (Great Introductory book) - Very thorough treatment of the subject from well rounded, expert authors. Text assumes no previous knowledge, and is quite lengthy because of its comprehensive nature. I have used it many times as a reference text after taking a course in which it was required. Also this text is an example of a beautiful job of "book making". The text has many color plates -- and a high quality printing job. ...

Psychology - Themes and Variations Brief- Paperbound Edition with Concept Charts and InfoTrac

5 stars (Good) - It was fast and i received my book within a week of my purchase. I recommened to buy books from this seller. 5 stars (Great for distance learners!) - I am taking all distance learning courses and I have found that this book is user friendly and informative. As a student taking distance learning courses it is important to have a good understanding of your text materials to do well. This book has many features to help you take better notes, become a better reader, and allows you to test your knowledge throughout various points of each chapter as well as at the end of each chapter. This book contains personal applications and critical thinking applications at the end of every chapter. These elements of the text allow the student to apply what they have learned to their personal experience as well as their educational experience. This is a great pick for the distance learner and any student who appreciates a good education. 5 stars (one of the better Psych texts out there) - Before you shudder because your Intro Psychology professor made you buy this book, be grateful. This is one of the best Psych texts out there, hands down. The only letdown with it is how much it costs. This book explains everything in such a manner that you can actually learn from it, by drawing examples from college students' lives, offering quotes and other info from the founders of Psychology, and even issuing oddball info on the human mind that you won't find elsewhere that will help you keep it all straight for your tests. Finally, this book also has an excellent colletion of study guides and internet resources. Coupled with a professor who uses this book to its maximum advantage, you will have an easier time understanding your intro Psych class. A really great text. ...

Thomson Advantage Books- Reason and Responsibility - Readings in Some Basic Problems of Philosophy

5 stars (fast shipping) - this is an old edition. but practically there is no difference. i saved a lot on this item. shipping is fast too 5 stars (Great Introductory Book) - I highly recommend Feinberg's 'Reason and Responsibility' to beginning philosophers. Feinberg presents various philosophical topics in an organized manner and selects text that is easy to understand for readers new to philosophy. Readers are weaned into the language of philosophy by first being presented with the jargon in the beginning of each section. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics, from arguments about God's existence to ethics to abortion. 5 stars (Great Anthology) - It is unclear whether my previous attempt to write a review of this book went through or not. If not, here goes again: A disclaimer: I have absolutely no connection with the authors or publishers and stand to benefit in no way from the sale of this book. My background: MA in philosophy and have taught as a teaching assistant on a number of philosophy courses at university level. Review: This is the best anthology of philosophical writing that I am aware of. It's strength lies in the range of readings it includes. The editors have, it seems, stayed very involved with their book and update the readings every few years. As a result this anthology includes some very recent material in addition to the classics. so, the reader has available to him/her a collection of writings that span nearly 2,500 years of Western philosophy. Note: it is an anthology of philosophy in the western tradition. A second notable strength of Reason and Responsibility is the introductory essays that appear at the start of each section. These are clear and especially helpful to those new to philosophy. It is also noteworthy that the editors have attempted to compile readings that give the reader a sense of the two sides to any given debate. This is not always the case with anthologies. One word of warning for those new to philosophy: mu...

Groups - Process and Practice with InfoTrac

2 stars (Late shipping) - The company indicated that it will ship in 2 business days. 24 days later, I finally got the book. I believe that there advertisement was greatly fabricated and I would have paid the extra to get my college textbooks here on time. As a result, I ended up buying my textbooks on campus and finally mailing the book back to the company when it arrived a month later. 4 stars (Excellent Material, But.............) - The Coreys have enormous understanding of group processes and the book contains a lot of very valuable material. BUT, the Coreys also use about three times as many words as necessary to make each point. They repeat the same ideas over and over again, making the book very tedious to read. It is valuable reading, however, if you can suffer through all the verbiage. 5 stars (A good book, but . . .) - I thought this book would be cheaper at amazon.com, but alas, strangely enough, I can get it cheaper at my college's bookstore. I will think twice from now on before I buy from amazon.com ...

Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences- Sixth Edition

4 stars (Very good instructions and practice exercises!) - Very good resource, it helped me to review for my entrance exams (Educational Psychology doctoral program). I passed them both. Be careful, though, this author doesn't use SUMMATION NOTATION. Make sure you learn that somewhere else if you're going into upper level courses. 5 stars (Gravetter's Statistics book) - This is one of the clearest books on introductory Statistics that I have read. Extremely logically written in a straight forward style. If you can't grasp Statistics using this book...try a different pursuit in college. Every concept is precisely explained and one subject builds upon the next. Gravetter provides one example after another in an attempt to hammer the concepts home...and a successful one I might add. This book also provides a solid foundation for the 1st half of an advanced, Stats II course. 5 stars (This book has saved my life) - I am about half way through this book and I actually understand, maybe even a bit excited about statistics. This book is definetly the best math/statisics textbook I have ever used. If you have hidden in fear from math but want to go to grad school, pick up a copy of this and you will not regret it. ...
