1 stars (The jury is still out on this one) - I've been very happy with the security package, but installing took days. Even the updates are slow. My computer has been slower since installing this program. I might have been better off getting Norton. This program offered free telephone service for problems and Norton charges for each call. 5 stars (Finally, an affordable easy-to-use all-in-one solution) - After years using first McAfee then Norton, I finally found a solid alternative. Trend Micro's PC-cillin is comprehensive PC protection that's easy to use, affordable and doesn't prevent critical applications from running as they were meant to -- and costs less than it's counterparts. Gone are the many many pesky "alerts" from Norton's security product (that, at times, a user has no idea how to answer and, if answered wrong, some things don't even work anymore). I've happily made the switch and I'll never go back again. 5 stars (Switched from Norton, McAfee and ZoneLabs) - I decided to standardize on a single anti-virus/firewall solution for the three computers in our house. This fit the bill. First, the competitive rebate makes it very affordable. They also offer a home three-pack, which costs what two individual licenses would. Second, the impact on my systems seems very negligible - I can't notice a performance difference when it's turned on or off. Third, using their Home Network feature you can manage installations of the product on other computer on your network. So I can administer all three of my computers without running around the house. Fourth, the firewall allows you to configure the types of access that are permitted (unlike the free ZoneAlarm firewall, which makes you explicitly permission each program you want in/out access). On the downside, the firewall configuration could be easier to understand. Once you have it setup you never notice it's there, though. Borland C++ Builder 6 Personal

1 stars (Borland is now dead) - I've been a Borland C/C++ programmer since Turbo C 2.0 and for years it's been the best compiler. Not now. I purchased both Borland C++ Builder 6 and Microsoft Visual C++.NET - the Visual C++ box weighed approx 6 times that of Borland's box (and although weight don't make a compiler, it's an indicator of the vendor's features and support). Visual C++ gives you more bang for the buck but I don't like Microsoft's managed .NET direction. Looks like it's time to seek a Linux solution! 1 stars (Sad just plain sad) - I was excited to come back to Borland. I remember that day's under Turbo C++. They truly had a superior product then first of it was fast. If you had to debug with in the class libraries you could step into them and find out where the problem was. What I have found with Borland today that scares me is it's based around Pascal. That is just not smart! It adds additional complexity to debugging. Try to step into it. I also could not understand why CBuilder violates some OOP OOD concepts through public member variables except when absolutely nessecary. I understand why now. This is a dangerous path...take it at your own risk. Pray that you never have to resolve a serious low level soft ware problem with this. It looks like it will have some serious teeth to bite with. I would have give this zero but the option wasn't available. Microsoft truly has a better product than this. And I was truly excited to see what new ideas Borland had come up with when I came back to this tool set. Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 0 Windows

5 stars (Big step-up from 2.0) - Just returned from a workshop at the Santa Fe Photo Workshop. Was amazed to learn how much more I can do with Elements 3.0 compared to 2.0. There was no difference in the class between the capabilities of my Elements 3.0 and the folks who were using Photoshop CS2; however, there were lots of things I would not have been able to do in 2.0. I am sure that for professional photographers, CS2 offers many advantages - but, as a "serious amateur", I am glad I didn't spring for the additional cost. I love the way you can move back and forth between the quick fix function and standard editing with just a click on buttons at the top of the screen. Having the adjustment sliders down the right side of the screen is very convenient - although that makes the photo workspace smaller. For the price, Elements 3.0 is top notch in my opinion. 3 stars (Amazing color-correction, but Windows users beware!) - I feel like an idiot for buying this software. This is a Macintosh application that has been ported to Windows with predictably confusing results. I was looking for an inexpensive alternative to the various photo editting tools I've acquired with different hardware peripherals. In the past I have relied on an old Adobe product that came with my HP scanner to do simple photo editting, but I was having trouble installing it on my Windows XP machine, and thought it was time to look for something more modern. A large part of this product suite is a photo organizer that is not as easy to use as Picasa, a free product available from Google. I have only begun to attempt to use the photo editting software on the JPEG files I have been scanning from slides. I must say that the "auto correction" operation, whatever it does exactly, seems really excellent. Quicken Deluxe 2006 Mac

4 stars (Another small set of improvements) - Of late I have been skipping years between Mac Quicken upgrades, and even doing that, find relatively little changed each time. Perhaps that is why Intuit is happy to force stragglers forward by restricting online banking features to recent releases (although as software developer myself, I do understand the support and maintenance arguments as well). The 2006 release continues in this vein, but I do feel it was a worthwhile investment on its own merits. My credit union has paid the "Mac tax" Intuit requires in order for their online banking features to interoperate with Quicken, so I am lucky enough to be able to use them. And they work very well. The one-step-update and downloaded transaction windows look nicer and are more responsive compared to the 2004 version, and have some useful new features. For example, the downloaded transactions window's dropdown menu for choosing an online account now provides a visual indication of which accounts contain new transactions. This saves a lot of time in conjunction with one-step updates. The new flexibility in scheduling calendar-based transactions is useful too. There were things (like my direct-deposit paychecks) which previously couldn't automatically be assigned the right dates. Now they can, and it was easy to fix them. I'm less impressed with the much hyped "backup to .Mac" feature, however. It's perhaps helpful for people who lack a backup strategy for all their important documents (such as the Backup program which comes with .Mac), but it pales by comparison with what it could and should be: Quicken should take advantage of the Sync Services offered by Tiger and .Mac to let you synchronize your Quicken accounts between multiple computers. I should not have to care whether I'm on my PowerBook at work or my PowerMac at home; transactions I enter in either place should appear on the other. Instead, I can only run Quicken at home and sync with Pocket Quicken on my Treo. ...

Norton Internet Security 2005 - Single User AntiVirus- Firewall- Privacy- AntiSpam- Parental Contro

1 stars (Norton Internet Security is a complete waste of time & money.) - I purchased Norton and I have always used Norton as my anti-virus and firewall. I purchased Norton (again) last year and will not be renewing my subscription this year. This product is a joke. It completely slows down my laptop without reason (laptop is a high end IBM), it sends out a million messages for no apparent reasons and keeps asking to be un-installed and re-installed because one function or another is not working. Symantec really need to fix this software or lose all their customers. 2 stars (The anti-virus component might be OK, but the rest is buggy.) - Norton anti-virus at some point was the best anti-virus program, then it started going down hill and especially when they bundled this other useless (trash-ware) Internet security components. I am an above average computer user. This product is not worth the money. It is probably best to spend the money on just the anti-virus alone if that is still any good. When I installed this program it slowed down my 550 MHz system. If I try to send an email with an attachment it timed out (poor programing) because it scans the outgoing mail and it is also supposed to "train" its anti-spam engine, which is by the way useless, a simple OE filter catches more spam than it ever hopes to. I have DSL so it is not a bandwidth or timeout issue like Symantec would like you to believe, it is simply that Norton acts as the mail server for your email client but acts less than that due to poor or incomplete programing. Symantec's website is not much help on this big defect in the program. The solution that I discovered after days of trial and error is to disable the scanning of the outgoing email all together, this applies to the email scanning of outgoing messages and the filtering/training in the anti-spam options (so much for paying the extra for the Internet security features that have to be disabled in most cases unless you are just sending ...

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe 16

3 stars (Mavis Beacon on Mac OS X) - I originally used Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 8 on a PC Windows 98. Loved it. This was back when MB was with Mind Spring. Simply Flawless. Now with Broderbund as MB Teaches Typing Deluxe 16 on an iMac G5 running OS X is a so so product for graphics. Actually pooh, pooh. It works OK as a typing teaching tool. I recently got to a lesson and got a fatal error requiring me to Force Quit the program and start over. It went back to the same lesson and required another Force Quit. Broderbund's website doesn't have any support. No updates for the S/W. So, would I buy this again. Yeah, cause this is all that I know for teaching typing. If you can buy this for around $10ish plus shipping and handling like I did then OK. 1 stars (They were right - not XP compatible) - Even after reading about issues with XP from other reviewers, I decided to go with Mavis Beacon simply because the competing typing software is even worse. I also could not believe that Broderbund would be this outdated - or misleading. Wrong. This product will not install under Windows XP SP2. AutoPlay brings up an unresponsive installer, prompting an error report every time. The Start > Run command (recommended by the install instructions) results in absolutely nothing. So I installed it on my aging Windows ME system, and it ran without a problem. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 16 Deluxe is probably the only thing Windows ME can do better than XP. 1 stars (Stay away from Broderbund software) - I wish I could give them zero stars.
