Investment Science

5 stars (Good book to understand quantitative finance) - Luenberger was a professor of optimization and his books on that subject are also very good. Clear and Precise. But sometimes he is extremely concise, so that you need to work a bit to completely understand a point. In this book, we have again the same style (after all, it is the author style): Clear and precise book, GOOD choice of notation (I cant say the same thing about HULL's books) but sometimes extremely concise. Overall, a good book to start learning and on a solid foundation. 5 stars ( Investment Science must have) - Great book, covers lots of material and goes beyond by using the log utility to portfolio growth. Great buy!!!! 5 stars (One of the few books I have purchased twice.) - This is the best book by far on the theory of finance. The book covers all the important fundamental concepts and develops them into practical models without going overboard and introducing every possible variation on the model. the style is both conversational and mathematical. It is replete with discussions about the material, but it doesnt gloss over the math. I took professor Luenbergers course at Stanford, and it piqued my interest in finance enough to pursue it professionally. (At the time, I was a masters student in electrical engineering.) I purchased several other books in finance. I dont even know where they are now, every time I have a question or need to build a new model, I go straight to Luenberger. This book is so good, I bought a second copy just as a backup, in case I lose my copy and the book goes out of print. ...

Paul Wilmott on Quantitative Finance- 2 Volume Set

5 stars (THE place to start) - I bough 20 books before this set. I was wondering if the older Derivatives book was really worth $450 used without the CD. This is the place to start. It is written with style and humor coupled with a pace that is simple to adjust to. I judge a book by how many equations it has - more is BETTER! This set strikes a balance. The exposition is solid. It covers many specialized topics like Energy Derivatives (just a taste, mind you, but it is there to get us thinking). I guess the bottom line is this book allowed me to start thinking like a Financial Quant and less like a mathematical physicist. I have gotten much more out of the other more mathematical works because I understand how the Quants think. I still like The Physics of Finance by Ilinsky. This is more than the past Derivatives book (that makes up the first 65% of volume 1) and sets a real tone to understanding - this is just what I was looking for as I re-tool. Buy this FIRST. Read the TOC. Get moving! 1 stars (Insufficient) - This is not as good as Wilmott's earlier work, and even that could have benefited from better definition of terms. Wilmott needs to brush up on the latest techniques and talk to some practitioners to learn how to apply math to real world examples. It seems there is a lack of depth of understanding evidenced by the writing. The sections of self-expose are an embarrassment. 1 stars (Old Material) - This is recycled Wilmott, but not even as good as earlier work. His first book was better, probably because his co-authors talked some sense into him. His personal anecdotes demonstrate a low emotional IQ. It is as if Wilmott thinks that if readers agree with the finance they must agree with his incessant and juvenile self-regard. My reaction to the inappropriate self-expose was: "Who cares? Get some friends, they might help on the financial aspects of this book". Wilmott's financial IQ is only average, if this book is to be the evidence. It ...

21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me - Practical Advice for New Real Estate Professionals

2 stars (One piece of advice...avoid it - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - This is lousy entry book for Real Estate professionals. Myself and my husband, Jameson Thottam (he used to work with Real Estate firms such as The Loan Page, Homestore and IndyMac Bank), have been dabbling in residential real estate and we found this book a horrible start in terms of teaching the core secrets (i.e., valuation, SEC II stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties). Trust us, Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam....we've been in the business for the last two years now and would not recommend this book. -The Thottam family 5 stars (Great for Newbies) - This book is a great way for new agents to know what they are getting into. The book covers a multitude of issues that people outside of the industry don't know about including what to expect (and what not to) from your broker. There's very little detail in the book, but it's a great overview and, quite frankly, you'd be hard pressed to get all of the information about real estate into 10 books, much less one. This is a terrific book for setting your expectations in a realistic place. It covers everything from planning your career change to how to hold an open house. I'd highly recommend it for new agents just getting started or for anyone thinking about getting started in the industry. I offer it as a suggestion to all the new agents I train. 4 stars (Very Good Book for New Licensees) - I am just got my license, and I can tell you, alot of the 'how to be successful in real estate in your first year' and from the various seminars I have attended, they all basically say the same thing - Market yourself, prepare for the rough patches, work, work, work to see results. Nothing really earth shattering or inspiring. But I liked this book because of it's honesty. Alot of what you hear and read in other books, on how to market your self and get leads - this b...

The Art of the Start - The Time-Tested- Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything

5 stars (Outstanding!!) - Brilliant, BUY IT, learn from it. This book covers all the major stumbling blocks to growing a business from capital raising to giving a presenation. Whilst it should not be the only start-up book in an arsenal, it is almost certainly the best start. Combining an easy-to-read writing style with some real life experience, Kawasaki has written one of the best business books available at the moment. 5 stars (The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki) - This is an entrepreneur's bible. It is a complete guide to what matters for new entrepreneurs, and a great crib sheet for experienced entrepreneurs. 4 stars (Worth the (little) time and effort.) - This book was a quick and enjoyable refresher in a lot of what I felt like I knew before... which I say to mean, I didn't take life-altering proverbial knowledge with me when I was done... but it did renew my passion and focus my energies in the proper, productive direction. It's a quick and straight-forward book, capable of tackling in a weekend. The author is engaging, entertaining, informative and to the point. I'd recommend checking it out. ...

Trade Like a Hedge Fund- 20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies Techniques to Winning Profits

1 stars (Another Disappointing Book on Strategy) - Every once in a while I go out and buy another strategy book to flip through, and honestly, I am generally disappointed in what is out there. This book however ranks among the worst. The first sign is the blatant grammatical and spelling errors starting in Chapter 1 (i.e. "...then we are run like hell out of the trade."). The second warning bell comes with the gross misrepresentations about the market in general (i.e. "...low-price stocks translates into a higher-risk premium and, as a category, these low-priced stocks tends to do well..." - again, the author's grammar, verbatim). Sometimes the poor grammar can be chalked up to someone who is so into their game that they skipped less important classes when they were young (i.e. grammar, spelling, literature), and market hype can be the result of true passion, albeit a wee bit overzealous. Unfortunately, the reader quickly discovers the actual content is not very useful either, and is just a re-hashing of weak systems containing catchy buzz words and simplistic formulas. 5 stars (Greate book for system devlopers) - I have been developing trading systems for 5 years and this book has many intesting ideas. I checked most of them out with my data and started trading with some. I think it is a great book for someone who is interested with system development and needs new ideas. 1 stars (Don't waste your time or money.) - This is one of those rare books which are so thin, you can learn as much from their table of contents as from their actual contents. There are a number of things I didn't like about this book and its packaging, but I will only list two for brevities sake. First, there are not "20 Successful Uncorrelated Strategies". "Technique 19" is simply a list of what the author believes doesn't work. "Technique 20" is a reading list of books the author likes; there are probably hundreds of Wall Street listmanias listing the same books. The other 18 present abs...

Profitable Candlestick Trading- Pinpointing Market Opportunities to Maximize Profits

4 stars (Teaching the reader how to fish) - This is a more applied book than Nison's Candlestick Charting. It focuses more on profit from candlestick signals than the psychology behind their appearance. Easy to use, and build your filtering system, or interpret what you see in the pre-built filters [...] Bigalow covers building a filtering system as well, but he leaves alot of material uncovered. He offers a FREE website forum and Thursday night chat where he answers the questions generated from the book, which furthers the growth of a candlestick trader. One additional note, although not intended, the book is most applicable to the short-term trader looking to skim the market. With a little thought the information contained in the book can be used to generate stronger entry and exit signals once the setup is in place. One knock, discussion on stops seemed like an afterthought with very little attention. 4 stars (Great Book) - This is a great book to help you start trading with less risk. Using the candlestick patterns will help you enter and exit positions better and with a higher chance of success. Not every trade will be a profitable one, but with the techniques in this book I've been able to reduce the losses on the bad trades and hold on longer to the profitable ones. I have given this book just 4 stars because the author has a second book coming very soon and I expect that with the combination of the two books, they will be 5 stars. This book not only teaches the candlestick patterns and how to recognize them, but it also teaches you how to make money trading them. Money management, trade size, etc. are all very important concepts and not often explained. Here they are. This is a must read book for anyone interested in this trading technique. 5 stars (Stop the Confusion - Switch to the Candlestick Method !) - Steve Bigalow's book is worth every penny! As an introduction to using Candlesticks for trading, this book explains in an easy to underst...

Bubble After Bubble in The Ongoing Bubble Boom - Oil Bursts- the Housing Bubble Fades and Now Stocks

4 stars (Next best thing to a crystal ball) - Harry Dent has a good track record in calling the larger movements and turn-arounds in the stock market and other investments. He uses both fundamentals (e.g. demographics) as well as technical (i.e. charts) to predict what will happen in the stock market, housing prices, oil prices, etc. No one can predict the future prefectly but Dent appears to have a better crystal ball than almost anyone else. I know for sure it's better than mine. I will be making some changes in my investment strategies based on this, but I will also keep an eye out for if things aren't materializing the way he projects. The main negative I have with this booklet is it is very repetitious. 5 stars (Fascinating) - More than ever, a degree in economics is required in order to make sense of the macroeconomic forces shaping our world. 2 stars (Nothing is roaring, DJI has been flat since 2001) - Dow Jones is still going through its major corrections after the roaring 80s and then the 90s. We are experiencing the same cylical phase that happened in the 70s - when war, energy crises, international market expansions, and demographic changes were gradually driving the economy to a malaise. The main difference is that the country was in little debt 30 years ago. We are now owing other countries trillions of dollars, and the trade deficit will continue to soar. The economy may sink as a result, but it has nothing to do with bubble bursting. That was already done in the stock market years ago. Should the economy finally collapse, it will have to do with our structural economic problems. Most probably prefer a soft-landing rather than a hard collapse. It will take some sacrifice and some political leadership to achieve a peaceful and endurable transition. It will be about our committment to paying down the debt, ending our oil dependence, and educating the workforce to take on the jobs of the new century that are not to be "outsourced" to other places. A...

Come Into My Trading Room- A Complete Guide to Trading

5 stars (Like reading a good novel) - This book is so well written it is actually like reading a novel. Dr. Elder shares an incredable amount of info. Should not be the only book on trading to read but definately is one of the best 5 stars (Even better than the first book) - Improves on Trading for a Living in that two complete trading systems are detailed, and is much more informative on trading stocks. There are many examples throughout, and Dr. Elder's writing is clear and lively, with many humorous anecdotes and maxims. I read it twice, and now feel better prepared to trade than before. A must. 5 stars (Great Book) - I have read both of Dr Elder's books. Come Into My Trading Room is an excellent book. I have developed a system based on MACD-Hist, ADX, Impulse Buy/Sell, and a 6 month exponential moving average. I have back-tested the system from 1975-2004. Based on 30 years of back-testing I had only one losing year -12%. The winning years had profits greater than 100% of a few occasions. However, most of the time the profits ranged from 30-40%. I will take those kind of numbers any day. The trades were executed on the following commidity markets... C, S, SM, BO, CL, HO, HU, NG, SP, TY, and US. I also used the money management system that he talked about in the book... 2% stop loss per trade and a max loss of 6% for the month. The system that I developed didn't trigger a bunch of trades. For all 30 years I never executed more than 75 trades in a single year. The trading style that Dr. Elder recommends in his book is not going to make you rich overnight; however, it will provide you with consistent steady returns year after year. By bankrolling profits from year to year one can become a millionaire in due time. I am currently going to paper trade my system for the entire year of 2005 to verify that it is as profitable in real time as in back testing. I will send out another review in 2006 detailing my results. ...

Real Options Analysis- Tools and Techniques for Valuing Strategic Investments and Decisions

4 stars (On average: a good book ) - This was my first book on Real Options. After this, I complemented my knowledge with more accurate researches on the theoritic foundations on the subject (eg. Trigeorgis and Copeland). What I liked of this text is that it was a soft landing into the Real Option world, with a simple and easily understandable description. Its major pro is to present transparently the basics of a concept that is often approached at a too high and formal level. What I did not like is the fact that few chapters at the end were not really useful but full of stuff and formulas with no explanations that cannot practically be used. I had the sensation they were out of place, since I could grasp their meaning only after passing to more comprehensive books. One more criticism is that you don't understand the effect of the difference between private and public risk in real options evaluation as you do with other texts. However, I still consider this the book where I formed my basics before being able to master some other more detailed book (but also more difficult to master). The Crystall-Ball package was also a nice surprise. At the end, if you consider the price and the content it was surely good value for money even though it's not a masterpiece. 5 stars (An excellent book for intermediate reader) - Mun's book is an excellent guide for those who have basic knowledge about asset valuation and want to study real options. 4 stars (decent read on real options) - decent read... did a good job on explaining practical uses of real options. would have been better if not so much written promoting the use of crystal ball. overall, happy to see that minimizes coverage on replicating portfolios and focuses on risk neutral prob. i recommend this book, especially if mba student and brief coverage in intro class of real options leaves you interested / unfulfilled. ...
