I wish that I can exchange the book ... 4 stars (Troubling Guide to Alien Territory) - This books offers a broad coverage of health care topics for a non-financial person. It is most deeply flawed for its inability to communicate clearly to a lay person. Essentially it is a vocabulary primer of important financial principles and concepts. It requires abstract thinking and the ability to follow mathematical models. This reader studied Cleverly's text as a requirement for a healthcare finance class. The text was frustrating as this reader attempted to "know" everything about healthcare finances; however, this is probably not the intent of the book. It does present a road into the foreign land of finances. It demands respect for another set of data and another language for interpreting that data. One does not master this data set at one pass, however. Nevertheless, this reader did gain some new financial information. At the risk of being simplistic, but communicative; a listing of some of the concepts learned follows: 1. There are many users of financial information. 2. Financial information can guide the formation of programs. 3. Financial management is essential for successful healthcare organizations. 4. Various qualities of health care organization types. 5. How health care organizations make up for discouting and bad debt and capitated payments. 6. General principles of accounting and why they are important. 5 stars (Review of Law in Medicine) - Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic that it difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading. Students will find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts. 4 stars (Great information for those new to health care law.) - This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Our instructor is a lawyer and runs risk management at our university hospital. The text further explained basic legal priciples and related them to health care. Delivering Health Care in America- A Systems Approach- Third Edition

5 stars (The Best) - I've seen a lot of health care texts and this one is by far the best book of its kind. Very current and thorough coverage of all aspects of health care delivery. This book really shows you how all of the components of the health care system fit together. The author has done a remarkable job and all students in health care and health administration need to read this book. KUDOS!!!! 1 stars (Fluffy) - This book is near 600 pages, but it could be condensed to 300 easily: by cutting back on some simplistic flow charts and over-explanation. Maybe the goal was to make the book readable for the high school level, but I didn't find its style or level appropriate for a graduate (MBA) textbook. One further annoyance was the authors' shameless and open promotion of socialized health care. A more balanced take would give the authors greater credibility. 4 stars (Good introduction to the American health care system) - The book is a good basic introduction to the American health care system. If you are doing advanced health policy research this book is not for you. If you are teaching a class for undergraduates (or are someone who wants to know about 'nuts and bolts' issues) this would be perfect. For what it does (basic intro), it does well but do not look for sophisticated analysis here. ...

A superb reference or instructional text especially for students (and also for professionals or even non-specialist general readers seeking to brush up their understanding), Alcamo's Fundamentals Of Microbiology is a vital and welcome contribution to Biological Studies reference shelves. 4 stars (Good study guide for microbiology students) - I thought this book was a good source for summarizing microbiology subjects like telling the difference between staphylococcus and streptococcus in a very understandable way. It gave good summaries and served as a good source for studying for my college microbiology exams. If you really want to know the type of questions given on college microbiology exams get the following; Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi The latter study guide helped me to prepare more thoroughly for the kind of questions encountered on my finals and midterms. Varney-s Midwifery- Fourth Edition

5 stars (A must read) - I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe. I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option. I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background. 2 stars (Technically accurate, boring read) - I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them. 3 stars (This is a good reference book, but not the best for homebirt) - This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ...

The authors present epidemiologic concepts in an easy-to-understand manner with interesting supportive examples from the fields of reproductive health and HIV epidemiology. In addition to the standard chapters on study design, bias, and confounding, the book also includes very good chapters on measurement error, causation, and screening, as well as tried-and-proven guidelines for a critical review of epidemiologic studies. Public Health- Third Edition - What It Is and How It Works

1 stars (Inaccurate and vapid) - If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. The reader is left with a blinkered and rather utopian model of our current public health system - one that glosses over existing problems and presents only the most simplistic assessments. You might learn something if you're just beginning your public health studies, but for the rest of us, this book just isn't worth its exorbitant price tag. 5 stars (Wow...) - Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. The Wall Street Journal Online- One-Year Online Subscription

1 stars (Watch Out - Automatic Renewals and No Refunds) - This is not a complaint about Amazon, just the Wall Street Journal On-Line. I subscribed to WSJ Online and used a credit card to pay. As my subscription was ending, I started receiving e-mails saying that my credit card had expired and the subscription would not renew. That was fine with me because I hardly ever used it. Despite those messages, the subscription did renew and I received a much higher charge on my credit card than I had paid in the previous year. When I tried to cancel my unwanted subscription I was told that WSJ Online would not give any refunds and that I was stuck with the one year subscription. 5 stars (The WSJ has the best information) - I enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal Online. You don't have the clutter of newspapers, and you can save the articles you like on your computer. You can also use Google Desktop to index your computer so that if you want to search for a Wall Street Journal article that you saved on your computer you can put in a keyword and find it fairly quickly. The online subscription is also much cheaper in cost than the print version and to me far more convenient. The cost was much cheaper before. After the WSJ added the weekend edition, the price was raised, and it seems there is very little discounting as I have searched for a greater discount. You just have to learn how to navigate around the newspaper. My favorite thing to do is to click on Today's Print Edition on the left side. You can then see most of the important articles. I also like the feature where you click on most popular articles for the day, week and month. When you open an article, you will see that feature on the upper right hand side. Click on most popular. You can customize your page, and select an industry that you want to read about, and everyday you will see articles pertaining specifically to that industry. You can also see the European or Asian Wall Street Journal and ge...
